Roma only a point away from top and Real win Madrid Derby
Two epic matches this weekend which help shape the future of their leagues, not only this, but the so-called smaller matches also provide an insight to maybe how positions will shift in the table...
Roma - Inter Milan
This match was being described as the biggest match of the year in Italian press, and although 2-1 may seem like a rather dull score-line, it was full of action. Roma started firing on all cylinders, and in the 17th minute, Julio Cesar fumbles a simple catch and De Rossi is able to nip in with his toe to claim the first. With spirits high, Roma went on to play well, but Inter grew with time, not only did Samuel hit the crossbar, but Eto'o scuffed a couple of chances, and Diego Milito forced a great save from Julio Sergio. After halftime, Inter found the equalizer with Diego Milito slapping in a close cross from Sneijder, but just about 5 minutes later, Toni was left unmarked at the top of the box, and the striker turned and struck the ball into the bottom right corner, giving Roma the winner. But Inter came close with their final attacks, so close that Diego Milito even volleyed the ball at close range right into the post, and although Roma won, Inter had more chances which they didn't put away. This win re-opens the Serie A with Roma just one point away from the nerazzurri, hopefully making for a tight finish at the end of the season.
Real Madrid - Atletico Madrid
A fantastic must-win derby for Real Madrid ended up 3-2 for Los Blancos, things were looking good for Atleti when Reyes scored a precision shot which snuck past Casillas from outside of the box. It took Real the rest of the half to get in the game, and after the interval Xabi Alonso tapped one in from the back post, then Arbeloa finished one after some great dribbling, and Higuain took advantage of mistakes made from Atletico's defense, completing the comeback. Although it seemed like Atletico's night after a wonderful blocked shot off the line from Higuain, Forlan's goal from the penalty spot wasn't enough to spur Atletico Madrid for the final comeback, letting Real Madrid keep up with Barcelona.
In England, Chelsea had no trouble at all with Aston Villa, an easy 7-1 win at Stamford Bridge was marked by a Lampard poker (two penalties), two goals from Malouda, and one from Kalou. Manchester United keep their title push strong against Bolton Wanderers pulling off a 4-0 win without Rooney, Berbatov scored two, Gibson one, and Samuel scored an own goal. The gunners were halted in their race for first after getting a 1-1 draw with Birmingham, a late goal from subbed on Nasri seemed the clincher, but Philips equalized in the last minutes making it 1-1. Liverpool got a comfy 3-0 win over Sunderland, a must-see wondergoal from Torres started the scoring, the Spaniard dribbled through the left flank then lashed out a shot which looped over Gordon, a sure contender for goal of the season. Johnson soon followed with a deflected effort from outside the box, and Torres scored another after scrambling an elegant finish to make it 3-0 for the reds.
In Italy, AC Milan failed to capitalize on Inter's slip, a 1-1 draw against Lazio was all they could manage, Borriello put them in front with a penalty, but Lichtsteiner equalized soon after giving Lazio an important point. Fiorentina got a great 4-1 win over Udinese, at halftime it seemed all equal after a goal from Vargas and one from Pepe, but Fiorentina came back rejuvenated after the half, first Gilardino, then Santana, and finally Jovetic completed the extravagant win for the Viola.
In Spain, Villareal move up the table after a 3-0 win over Sevilla, the two teams are now just 5 points apart, and it seems like Sevilla's push for Champions League football is weakening. Rossi started the scoring, and Llorente followed up soon after, both of them fed by Nilmar. Pires put the icing on the cake after being subbed on with a sublime finish past Palop, giving Villareal three important points. Real Zaragoza complete a difficult feat, a 3-0 win over Valencia which was spurred thanks to goals from Diogo, Arizmendi, Jarosik, and Zigic's expulsion, Valencia will be trying to prepare themselves after this bad defeat for Atletico Madrid in the Europa league this wednesday. Barcelona pull off a 1-0 win over Mallorca thanks to Ibrahimovic (or as I like to say: Zibra), the Swede tapped the winner in after Puyol had his effort saved from Aouate. But the biggest news won't be about Zibra, it'll be about Iniesta being out for the Champions League fixture against Arsenal, surely the first leg, and probably the second.

Messi gets another hat-trick and Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1
This week was massive in La Liga and the Premiership, Serie A not so much due to AC Milan's inability to take 1st place, and while Real and Barcelona continue to be tied, Manchester United are looking to get their fourth Premier League title in a row.
Manchester United - Liverpool
A match which could've propelled Liverpool closer towards fourth place, and it seemed like they would be able to after Fernando Torres scored a great header in the 5th minute, helping Liverpool take the lead at Old Trafford. This didn't last long as Valencia tried to dribble around a physical Mascherano, Valencia goes down and Howard Webb sees it as a penalty. Rooney steps up only to have it saved, but the Englishman quickly tucked away the rebound, tying things up for Manchester United. After the interval, Manchester United came out with more attacking conviction, and eventually in the 60th minute, Darren Fletcher was able to strike a cross which Ji-Sung Park performed a Gullitt like diving header for the winner. Giggs makes his return, securing the squad, and while Sir Alex celebrates his two point lead at the top, Rafa Benitez complains about Manchester United's penalty.
In England, Chelsea continue their slump of poor results after a 1-1 draw away against Blackburn Rovers, everything seemed fine when after just 6 minutes Drogba scored, but Chelsea's diamond formation lacked width and eventually led to El-Hadj Diouf score the equalizer. Manchester City find some good form after a 2-1 win over Fulham, City was leading after 7 minutes with Santa Cruz's tap in, and then Tevez doubled the scoreline. Fulham came back with Murphy scoring a penalty, and the final minutes of the match were a bit too tense for a City that should've taken more chances. Tottenham stay in fourth spot after a great win against Stoke City, Gudjohnsen volleyed in the first in the 46th after replacing Pavlyuchenko, Stoke had Whitehead sent off, but they equalized with Etherington's penalty. Gudjohnsen created the winner for Kranjcar who lashed the ball into the back of the net, keeping the Spurs in a Champions League spot by two points. Portsmouth pull of a fantastic 3-2 win over Hull City, being 2-1 down in the 88th, Pompy had O'Hara curl in a fantastic free kick, and a minute later Kanu scored an epic winner for Portsmouth who are bottom with 13 points.
In Spain, Real Madrid came back to win 3-1 against Sporting Gijon, first Barral scored putting Gijon in front, but after Van der Vaart tapped in Ronaldo's saved free kick, and Xabi Alonso headed in the second, and Higuain slotted a good finish in, the match seemed finished. Mallorca keep their bid for Champions League football strong after a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid, Atleti had Raul Garcia sent off, and Perea scored an own goal, making the match impossible to win. Valencia pulled off a 2-0 win over Almeria thanks to David Silva's genius, first the Spaniard created Mata's goal, then scored from the ground his own, keeping Valencia four points away from Mallorca. Three more fantastic goals came from Lionel Messi in Barcelona's 4-2 win away at Real Zaragoza, Messi has scored 11 in his last 5 matches, but Messi's three goals were almost challenged by Colunga. Colunga scored two in the 85th and the 89th, possibly preparing Zaragoza for a fantastic comeback, but Ibrahimovic netted a penalty in the dying minutes of the match to put the result in the bag for Barca.
In Italy, Cassano returns to his great former self after scoring a fantastic chip over Juventus' keeper Chimenti to allow Sampdoria to defeat Juventus 1-0, and the two revelations of the season, Bari and Parma, played each other and finished 1-1. Inter Milan drew 1-1 against Palermo, giving AC Milan a chance to take the top spot, but the rossoneri were only able to draw 1-1 with Napoli. The team which benefited the most from Inter's slip was Roma which won 4-2 against Udinese, a fantastic Vucinic hat trick along with a goal from Toni helped bring Inter only four points away, and next weekend they could bring the deficit to one as they'll play Inter Milan at the Stadio Olimpico.

Wolfsburg are able to go through against Rubin Kazan, a 2-1 win at home in extra time helped clinch the next round.

Barca Destroy Stuttgart and Inter Overpower Chelsea
A fantastic end to the Champions league round of 16, and now we finally know all of the quarter finalists, Europa League will be added on tomorrow after the matches, and when the draw happens on friday, you'll know where to find it, right here on SWU.
Chelsea - Inter Milan: Aggregate 1-3
Inter Milan simply overpowered Chelsea throughout the match, of course the blues looked dangerous sometimes, but fantastic resolute defending by Samuel, Lucio (who will miss the next Champions League match), and Maicon stopped Drogba in his tracks. Sneijder was magical, spreading passes which created 4 or 5 great scoring opportunities for Eto'o, Milito, and Pandev, but the magical moment was when Sneijder launched a beautiful ball with his left foot for Eto'o, and Eto'o did what he does best, score. At the end, it seemed that Drogba lost his cool, and kicked Thiago Motta who had fallen over, causing the Ivorian to be sent off in the final minutes of the match. Chelsea had some penalty shouts, but Inter severely overpowered Chelsea, completeing Jose Mourinho's epic return to Stamford Bridge.
Barcelona - Stuttgart: Aggregate 5-1
Barcelona were inspired by a brilliant Messi yet again, the Argentinean decided to take the ball and stroke it into the top left corner of Lehman's net in the 14th minute, and although Stuttgart pressed, it already seemed decided. Messi inspired Pedro's after a brilliant through pass to Toure Yaya who squared the ball to Pedro for the tap in, and Messi scored a third after quickly turning around at the top of the box, and stroking yet another beautiful ball in the bottom right corner this time. Bojan came on in the 88th for a wonderful Iniesta, and scored a minute later after a good pass from Ibrahimovic, Bojan slid it past Lehman to complete a fantastic night at the Camp Nou.
Sevilla - CSKA Moskva: Aggregate 2-3
This match was decided thanks to some horrendous goalkeeping by Palop, Necid quickly grabbed a goal in the first half, but Perotti quickly equalized after some great work by Navas on the right wing. Then came the goal which marked Palop's game, Keisuke Honda shot a good free kick which Palop punched right into his own net. Sevilla were unable to get the needed goals to go through after the mess-up from their keeper in the 55th minute, letting CSKA Moskva go through
Olympiakos - Bordeaux: Aggregate 1 -3
Chelsea - Inter Milan: Aggregate 1-3

Olympiakos - Bordeaux: Aggregate 1 -3
Bordeaux were led by a fantastic Gourcuff away from home, the young frenchman inspired his side with a free kick which looped over the keeper giving his side a crucial goal in the 5th minute of the match. Derbyshire was ssent off for Olympiakos, but they equalized soon after in the second half after a great volley by Mitroglou, seemingly restoring things for the Greek champions. Diarra was sent off for the French champions, and eventually Chamakh grabbed an important goal, a powerful header in the 88th which assured Bordeaux a spot among the quarter finalists.

Inter Lose to let AC Milan Close in at -1 while Messi Hat-Trick keeps Barca latched to Real
A weekend which includes a revitalized Serie A, Messi showing why he's number 1, and Rooney continuing his fantastic form. Not only all this, but in the Eredivisie a fantastic match between Ajax and PSV ended 4-1 for Ajax after some fantastic goals, especially a rocket shot by Emanuelson that went into the top right corner. This allows Steve Mcclaren's team FC Twente to remain 5 points ahead of PSV in first place in the Eredivisie, while Ajax is just one point from second-place PSV.
What do you think of this week's action? Comment below!
In Italy, Inter lose to Catania 3-1 after a disappointing display from the champions, Sulley Muntari was the main cause of their loss, after being substituted on he was sent off within 70 seconds letting Catania score the winners. AC Milan draw close to Inter after a 1-0 win over Chievo, everything seemed square until a rocket shot by Seedorf in the 90th won the game for the rossoneri. Juventus drew 3-3 against Siena, after going 3 up in the first 10 minutes thanks to a brace from Del Piero and a wonder shot from Candreva, Siena fought back for an important draw. Bari defeated Lazio 2-0 as they continue to rise, and Lazio continue to fall just two points from the relegation zone, if you want more info on Lazio and Bari check out this Serie A Talk article.
In Spain, Barcelona seem to be in great form before their Champions League match against Stuttgart, a 3-0 win over Valencia was thanks to a fabulous Messi hat-trick, and a great performance by Henry. Real Madrid have no problem rising back up against Valladolid after being kicked out of the Champions League by Lyon, Cristiano Ronaldo started the scoring with a fantastic free kick, but then it was the Higuain show, the Argentinean netted a hat-trick (with all the goals being somehow provided by a brilliant Ronaldo), and Valladolid were only able to cause an unfortunate own goal by Raul Albiol.
In England, Pavluchenko continues his fantastic form for Tottenham, scoring two in their 3-1 victory over Blackburn, Bolton crush Wigan 4-0, and Stoke City and Aston Villa drew 0-0. Arsenal grabbed a last gasp win over Hull City thanks to Nicklas Bendtner, and Chelsea pummeled West Ham 4-1 after a fantastic performance by Malouda who provided three great assists for Alex and twice for Drogba, and also netting a pretty nice goal himself. Rooney has no trouble continuing his goalscoring run after scoring two in Manchester United's 3-0 win over Fulham, Berbatov scored the other and also provided Rooney with an assist. Sunderland and Manchester City drew 1-1, it seemed to be a good win for Sunderland, but a beautiful curling shot into the top left corner by Sunderland supporting Adam Johnson let Manchester City grab a point.

Good News Bad News Friday: Jim Lovetoy Wonderblog and Donovan Returning to MLS
This is the first installment of the weekly Good News Bad News Friday, it's quite simple: every Friday SWU will find some good, and some bad to report, whether it be tabloid gossip or player injuries. And now on with the news...
Good News: Jim Lovetoy has a wonderblog
Jim Lovetoy's blog is probably the funniest football blog around right now, bringing memories of the fantastic Ballack and Neville diaries (if you haven't read those then search em up) the Lovetoy blog on The Football Ramble site is hilarious. With fantastic Chelsea bias, it has lines like,
Bad News: Donovan returns to MLS after Birmingham match
Donovan will be returning to the MLS to play for the LA Galaxy after the Birmingham City match, although there is some speculation that the USA captain could stay, it is unlikely and it would mean that the MLS strike continues. As an American I have loved following Landon throughout his Everton experiences, and Donovan says that he will certainly return to England, until then he will be an LA Galaxy player.

Lyon Knock out Real Madrid and Bayern Edge past Fiorentina plus Europa League results
And epic first week to the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, epic matches that showcase some fantastic young talents. Not only this, but the first leg of Europa League round of 16 ended with some interesting results...
Europa League 1st leg results:
Juventus get a 3-1 win against Fulham, but Roy Hodgson's side has a crucial away goal.
Panathinaikos slip up at home against Standard Liege, losing 3-1 at home.
Valencia and Werder Bremen fought out a 1-1 draw which had Valencia play without Banega for over 30 minutes after the promising young midfielder was sent off.
Hamburger have little trouble against Anderlecht winning 3-1 at home thanks to Mathijsen, Van Nilsterooy, and Jarolim.
Rubin Kazan and Wolfsburg drew 1-1 as did Benfica and Olympique Marseille.
Atletico Madrid and Sporting Lisbon battled out a 0-0 draw, Sporting had two men sent off and Atletico failed to capitalize.
Liverpool fall poorly against Lille losing 1-0, the reds will hope they can win back at Anfield, very similar to the Real Madrid - Lyon tie in the Champions League...
Champions League 2nd leg results:
Real Madrid - Lyon: Aggregate 1-2
Probably one of the greatest upsets in French Champions League history, Lyon was able to nab a 1-0 win back in France, but going to the Santiago Bernabeu is a much different thing. Real Madrid dominated the first half, a fiery Ronaldo along with a quick Higuain put Lyon on their heels, just 6 minutes in Guti plays a fantastic pass to Ronaldo who steams his way past a defender to slot it through Lloris' legs at a tight angle. It seems like it would be target practice for Real, but after many wasted opportunities and selfish decisions (Higuain hits the post on a completely open net etc.), Real Madrid only went in one up after the first half. Claude Puel decided to make two key substitutions at the half, putting Kallstrom and Gonalons for Makoun and Boumsong, these two gave an attacking spark to the Lyon side that was slowly growing in confidence. Govou misses a good chance in front of Casillas, but eventually, in the 75th minute, Lisandro Lopez flicks up a ball in the 18 for Pjanic to volley into the goal. Real Madrid break down completely for the rest of the match, players are greedy and Kaka' is eventually taken off much to his anger. Lyon break down Real Madrid a couple times and find themselves 1 on 1 against Casillas, but they don't need to score, wasting fantastic opportunities to humiliate Real further, the two teams draw 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Fiorentina - Bayern Munich: Aggregate 4-4 Bayern through on away goals
After the refereeing injustices that Fiorentina suffered in the Allianz Arena, the Italian team was ready to make an impact at home, it took Fiorentina 28 minutes to make the breakthrough, Vargas leaps onto a ball out on the left wing and blasts it past Butt letting the Viola take the lead. In the second half, Jovetic helps lengthen the lead by sliding it past Butt after a clever back-heel from Gilardino, but Bayern react with a low shot by Van Bommel heavily affected by the windy conditions in Florence. Jovetic scores again after a loose ball in Bayern's area was badly cleared, but Fiorentina's hopes were halted by a phenomenal shot by Robben, after dribbling past two defenders, the Dutchman cuts in and blasts the ball into the top left corner. Even though Bayern lost, they were equal in score letting the Germans go through on away goals.
Arsenal - Porto: Aggregate 6-2
What should've been a shaky evening for Arsenal without Fabregas and Gallas turned out to be an homage to Wenger's beautiful football, all of Arsenal's players were fantastic, working to demolish a mediocre Porto side. Arshavin was deadly along the wing, providing Bendtner with fantastic service twice, which the striker tucked away quickly putting the gunners two up by halftime. Then the Nasri show began, the young Frenchman playing in Fabregas' role goes on a fantastic slalom dribbling past three Porto players before tucking the ball into the far corner at an impossible angle. Soon after Eboue followed after rounding Helton and passing the ball in the net, and finally Bendtner grabbed his first hat trick in his senior career after slotting a penalty into the back of the net, making the final score 5-0 for the gunners.
Manchester United - AC Milan: Aggregate 7-2
It seemed inevitable that Manchester United would breeze past AC milan, but the careless meandering fashion which the English champions accomplished the feat was amazing, it took a Rooney double to put the game to bed, a fantastic header and a good finish. Ji Sung Park then slotted one home right before Rooney was replaced by Berbatov, the Englishman did what he needed to do, and Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to make sure he kept his wonder-boy far from any possible injuries. AC Milan had some possession of the ball, but United let them have it where there was no danger, and eventually the fourth came, a diving header from Fletcher completed the great United night which brought memories of the 7-1 thrashing against Roma.

Real Latch onto Barcelona and Inter held to a draw
This weekend was filled with cup action in England, allowing footy fans to watch leagues from around the world. And the only Premiership match that took place was one in which an American scored, hoping that Donovan can continue with Everton.
In England, Everton - Hull City finished 5-1 for the toffees, Arteta netted two, with Donovan scoring one and giving a great assist for Rodwell. Hull scored with Cairney, but Garcia put one past Myhill in an unlucky own goal created by Arteta. The other Premiership fixture was Wigan - Liverpool which finished Wigan 1 Liverpool 0, Torres missed great chances, and eventually Rodallega put one away to make sure that Wigan stay firmly out of the relegation zone.
Roma - AC Milan
Both teams were desperate to gain some points, but in the end they basically cancelled each other out, Roma started with vigour, Julio Baptista shot a rocket in the first ten minutes which swerved towards the top right corner, only to be saved by a brilliant Abbiati. But after their strong start, Roma lost their pace, and Milan started to grow in confidence, raising the tempo of the match which hurt the tired Roma side. Vucinic tried to make the difference but AC Milan was the dominant force throughout the rest of the match, and although they didn't capitalize on their chances, Milan look ready to face Manchester United in midweek.
In Italy, Juventus continue their chase for Champions League football after defeating Fiorentina 2-1, a great goal by Diego, rounding Frey to tap it in, and a powerful close range shot by Grosso let Juventus push for the fourth spot. Inter Milan were held to a 0-0 draw by Genoa, Balotelli started, and disappointed, the youngster slowed down the tempo of the game constantly diving and attracting fouls, and eventually when he was actually fouled in the box, the ref refused to acknowledge it, thinking of it as another dive. Sampdoria came back to win 2-1 against an everfalling Lazio, Floccari started the scoring, but a rocket by Guberti, and a goal by Pazzini helped Sampdoria claim three important points.
In Spain, Real Madrid latch onto Barcelona after an epic 3-2 comeback against Sevilla, Real went two down after Xabi Alonso netted an unfortunate own goal, and Dragutinovic scored, seemingly giving Sevilla the win. But in four minutes Real Madrid were level, Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first in the 60th with Sergio Ramos following in the 64th. Then it was super-sub Van der Vaart who was able to squeeze the ball past Palop in the 93rd minute who gave his side a fantastic win. Barcelona had a slip rarely seen, away to Almeria Barcelona drew 2-2, Domingo Cisma gave Almeria the lead in the 12th minute, but Messi equalized twice after Puyol let in an own goal. One goal was a beautiful free kick by the Argentinian, just a half step, and the chip swerved beautifully into the back of the net, but what probably stopped Barcelona from winning was Ibrahimovic's direct red card in the 61st, leaving Barcelona to watch Real Madrid latch onto them at the top of the table.

International Friendlies: Crouch at the double
Peter Crouch stepped up his claims for a FIFA World Cup starting spot with two goals as England came from behind to defeat Egypt 3-1 at Wembley. The Tottenham striker took his goal tally for his country to 20 in 37 games after replacing club-mate Jermaine Defoe at half-time when England trailed to Mohamed Zidan's opener. Shaun Wright-Phillips also hit the target as England recovered from a poor first-half performance to run out comfortable winners.
"Anyone who plays for England is going to feel under pressure, certainly in a World Cup year," Crouch said after the game. "You can only try to do your best and I did. Its up to the manager. All you've got to do when given your chance is try and take it and I've given the manager something to think about tonight."
Rooney looked lively and El Hadary fumbled a low drive from the Manchester United player who had scored the winning goal against Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final on the same ground three days ago. However, England were indebted to a goal-line clearance from Defoe for keeping them on level terms after Robert Green appeared slow to react to a shot hit into the ground from Wael Gomaa following a corner from Mohamed Zidan.
England were now in control territorially and El Hadary held onto an effort from Terry from a Baines centre. Yet Egypt still moved the ball around in impressive fashion whenever the chance presented itself to venture forward. As usual, Rooney offered the best hope of providing some salvation early in the second half, but his curling 20-yard effort was easily collected by El Hadary. England's distribution of the ball was leaving a lot to be desired with a completely over-hit pass from Gerrard aimed at Rooney's run summing up their evening.

All you've got to do when given your chance is try and take it and I've given the manager something to think about tonight."
Egypt looked full of confidence in the early stages and enjoyed plenty of possession, but it was England who created the first clearcut opening after five minutes. Rooney picked out the run behind the Egyptian defence of Walcott and his low centre fell perfectly into the path of Frank Lampard, but the Chelsea midfielder struck his shot straight at Essam El Hadary who was able to parry his effort at the expense of a corner.

However, England were indebted to a goal-line clearance from Defoe for keeping them on level terms after Robert Green appeared slow to react to a shot hit into the ground from Wael Gomaa following a corner from Mohamed Zidan.
Rooney set up a chance for Defoe but he hesitated slightly as he prepared to shoot and Ahmed El Mehamady was able to make the challenge. El Hadary cut out a low cross from Gareth Barry as England started to settle down although Zidan was only just too high with a shot from a narrow angle.
After 23 minutes the 80,000 home fans were stunned when Zidan put Egypt ahead following a slip by Matthew Upson. The West Ham defender went tumbling to the ground and allowed Zidan to take a pass from Hosni Abd Rabou in his stride, but the striker still showed some first-class control and a clinical finish in drilling his shot past Green.
England tried to retaliate and Rooney glanced a header wide from a chip into the box from Steven Gerrard. Then a corner from debutant Leighton Baines found its way to Lampard at the far post but his shot bounced down and over the crossbar. Defoe was only just too high with a flashing header and then forced El Hadary to push his shot around the post after shaking off the challenge of Gomaa who tried to tug him back.

But out of the blue Crouch brought England back on level terms with 56 minutes on the clock. Gerrard found Barry in space to the right of the Egyptian box and his low cross was clinically converted by the Tottenham striker. Rooney volleyed just over the bar after Crouch had failed to make proper contact with a bicycle kick from a Wright-Phillips centre.
Gerrard was replaced after 72 minutes by James Milner and he quickly made an impact as England went ahead with 15 minutes remaining through fellow substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips. The Aston Villa midfielder saw his fierce shot beaten out by El Hadary but Wright-Phillips converted the rebound although the Egyptian keeper should have done better with his attempts to block the effort.
Then Crouch struck for the second time to take his England goal tally to 20 in the 80th minute. This time Wright-Phillips was the creator, although Crouch looked offside when he poked the ball over the line. Rooney left the field to rapturous applause when replaced by Carlton Cole, handing the captain's armband to Gareth Barry, who was the Three Lions’ third captain on a satisfactory night for Capello's men.

Real Dominate as Manchester City Overpower Chelsea
The John Terry scandal has probably affected Terry's playing much more than anyone thought it to, and maybe this weekend he was feeling some guilt for his former England teammate Wayne Beidge who refused to shake Terry's hand. Not only this, but it seems that Manchester United have no trouble winning thanks to their wonderboy Rooney who helped them win the Carling Cup over Aston Villa.
Manchester City - Chelsea It seemed that Roberto Mancini's pretty scarf was getting tighter and tighter around his neck as results didn't go his way and may City supporters accused him of being too defensive, but a fantastic victory against Chelsea will surely help his team bounce back, possibly into fourth place. Lampard started the scoring after a great finish after being given too much space for the shot, it seemed routine stuff for Chelsea until Tevez caught them on a break, he quickly baffled a distracted Terry to slide in a cool finish past Cech. Bellamy put City ahead soon after, wig lots of space on the left wing, Bellamy slid the ball past Cech at a tight angle, crushing Chelsea's hopes of hanging on. Belletti was sent off after a push on Gareth Barry in the box, giving Manchester City a penalty that Tevez had no trouble with, and not long after, the scoreline read 4-1 as Bellamy tapped in another after City caught Chelsea's defense on a break again. Lampard put away a late penalty, but it was too little too late, a fantastic performance by Manchester City which certainly gave Wayne Bridge something to smile about.
Final score: 2-4
Udinese - Inter Milan
Inter have little difficulty getting past Udinese 3-2, Pepe started the scoring after a great pass by Di Natale released him 1 on 1 with Julio Cesar in the 2nd minute, but three minutes later, Balotelli scored an unsavable volley rocket, making it all tied. Maicon then marauded onto a flick by Pandev sending a screaming volley into the top corner, and soon after a glancing flick of the head by Milito put Inter in front before the half. Udinese pulled one back with a penalty from Di Natale, and although they pushed for a draw, Inter held on to continue their dominance in Italy.
In Italy, Juventus lost to Palermo 2-0, the bianconeri pushed in the first half but were crushed after a fantastic goal by Miccoli, and then a fatal error by Grygera left Budan to score the second on an empty net. Genoa lost 4-3 to Bologna, and Chievo snatched a win against Cagliari, 2-1. Napoli and Roma drew 2-2 after Hamsik scored a late equalizer and AC Milan remain close to Inter after their win against Atlanta.
In Spain, Real Madrid continue their fantastic goal-scoring run after beating Tenerife 5-1, Tene were great defensively but eventually crumbled when Higuain scored two, Kaka followed, then Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul. Barcelona kept their distance from Real after a much fought for 2-1 win over Malaga, Pedro scored after a long range effort in the 69th minute, but Valdo equalized in the 81st, Malaga were close to completing the fabled deed of a draw when Messi got the winner keeping Barcelona three points ahead of Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid got a great win over Valencia, they won 4-1 and Valencia had two men sent off in the match.
In England, Tottenham beat Everton 2-1, after the Russian Pavlyuchenko put them in front in the 11th minute, Modric scored a beautiful goal, a great shot that hit the crossbar and went in out of the reach of Tim Howard. Yakubu pulled one back, and Landon Donovan missed an open goal to give Tottenham the win. Liverpool beat Blackburn Rovers after two goals from their most important players, Gerrard and Torres, who both seem to be returning to some good form, and Arsenal beat Stoke 3-1. Some terrible news though for the gunners, Ryan Shawcross who was recently called up for an England friendly against Egypt entered on a fifty-fifty ball along with Aaron Ramsey, subsequently injuring Ramsey. It is unsure how long Ramsey will be out, but it could easily be for the rest of the season.
