Real Dominate as Manchester City Overpower Chelsea

The John Terry scandal has probably affected Terry's playing much more
than anyone thought it to, and maybe this weekend he was feeling some
guilt for his former England teammate Wayne Beidge who refused to
shake Terry's hand. Not only this, but it seems that Manchester United
have no trouble winning thanks to their wonderboy Rooney who helped
them win the Carling Cup over Aston Villa.

Manchester City - Chelsea

It seemed that Roberto Mancini's pretty scarf was getting tighter and
tighter around his neck as results didn't go his way and may City
supporters accused him of being too defensive, but a fantastic victory
against Chelsea will surely help his team bounce back, possibly into
fourth place. Lampard started the scoring after a great finish after
being given too much space for the shot, it seemed routine stuff for
Chelsea until Tevez caught them on a break, he quickly baffled a
distracted Terry to slide in a cool finish past Cech. Bellamy put City
ahead soon after, wig lots of space on the left wing, Bellamy slid the
ball past Cech at a tight angle, crushing Chelsea's hopes of hanging
on. Belletti was sent off after a push on Gareth Barry in the box,
giving Manchester City a penalty that Tevez had no trouble with, and
not long after, the scoreline read 4-1 as Bellamy tapped in another
after City caught Chelsea's defense on a break again. Lampard put away
a late penalty, but it was too little too late, a fantastic
performance by Manchester City which certainly gave Wayne Bridge
something to smile about.
Final score: 2-4
Udinese - Inter Milan

Inter have little difficulty getting past Udinese 3-2, Pepe started the scoring after a great pass by Di Natale released him 1 on 1 with Julio Cesar in the 2nd minute, but three minutes later, Balotelli scored an unsavable volley rocket, making it all tied. Maicon then marauded onto a flick by Pandev sending a screaming volley into the top corner, and soon after a glancing flick of the head by Milito put Inter in front before the half. Udinese pulled one back with a penalty from Di Natale, and although they pushed for a draw, Inter held on to continue their dominance in Italy.

In Italy, Juventus lost to Palermo 2-0, the bianconeri pushed in the first half but were crushed after a fantastic goal by Miccoli, and then a fatal error by Grygera left Budan to score the second on an empty net. Genoa lost 4-3 to Bologna, and Chievo snatched a win against Cagliari, 2-1. Napoli and Roma drew 2-2 after Hamsik scored a late equalizer and AC Milan remain close to Inter after their win against Atlanta.

In Spain, Real Madrid continue their fantastic goal-scoring run after beating Tenerife 5-1, Tene were great defensively but eventually crumbled when Higuain scored two, Kaka followed, then Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul. Barcelona kept their distance from Real after a much fought for 2-1 win over Malaga, Pedro scored after a long range effort in the 69th minute, but Valdo equalized in the 81st, Malaga were close to completing the fabled deed of a draw when Messi got the winner keeping Barcelona three points ahead of Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid got a great win over Valencia, they won 4-1 and Valencia had two men sent off in the match.

In England, Tottenham beat Everton 2-1, after the Russian Pavlyuchenko put them in front in the 11th minute, Modric scored a beautiful goal, a great shot that hit the crossbar and went in out of the reach of Tim Howard. Yakubu pulled one back, and Landon Donovan missed an open goal to give Tottenham the win. Liverpool beat Blackburn Rovers after two goals from their most important players, Gerrard and Torres, who both seem to be returning to some good form, and Arsenal beat Stoke 3-1. Some terrible news though for the gunners, Ryan Shawcross who was recently called up for an England friendly against Egypt entered on a fifty-fifty ball along with Aaron Ramsey, subsequently injuring Ramsey. It is unsure how long Ramsey will be out, but it could easily be for the rest of the season.

Carling Cup final - Aston Villa 1 - 2 Manchester United

Wayne Rooney is mobbed after his superb header won the Cup

Latest Romanian Football News and more information on this match

Wayne Rooney was the Carling Cup final head boy as Manchester United came from behind to retain a knockout competition for the first time with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.

After starting as a substitute, Rooney was only on the pitch because of an injury to Michael Owen, who had levelled James Milner's fourth-minute penalty.

He was not going to let that inconvenience stop him becoming the Wembley match-winner against Villa though and 16 minutes from time, Rooney got on the end of Antonio Valencia's cross and looped home yet another headed goal - his fifth in a row - to take his goal tally for the season to 28 and allow United to retain the trophy after a thrilling Wembley encounter Sir Alex Ferguson feared was not possible.

One of the more obvious reasons why Ferguson would choose to leave his best player out of such a showpiece occasion was the surface, which has been claggy every time the Red Devils have played at the rebuilt stadium.

Fearing a draining match, plus extra-time, then an England game and a Premier League trip to Wolves, when victory will take his side top, before that decisive meeting with AC Milan on March 10, Ferguson presumably felt this was an outing Rooney could do without.

Yet any worries about the pitch were groundless. And Villa's flying start meant there was no chance of either side being allowed to turn this into the sterile affair many had predicted.
At the time, Martin O'Neill questioned how Nemanja Vidic avoided a card of any kind for his foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor. As the contest wore on, and an increasing number of his own players ended up in Phil Dowd's notebook, the criticism grew.

If Agbonlahor had gone down when Vidic first grabbed his shirt, the card should have been red. Instead, the Villa striker admirably attempted to stay on his feet after outpacing the Serbian to reach Ashley Young's lofted pass beyond the United defence. In the end, it was too much. Vidic stuck out a leg and hauled Agbonlahor down. Milner kept his nerve, sending Tomasz Kuszczak the wrong way to provide the contest with the start it craved.

As tends to be the case when they fall behind, United's response was an all-out attacking assault, which in turn provided Villa with space to counter. The mixture produced a thrilling spectacle, made all the more absorbing because Ferguson's team levelled so quickly.

So solid all season, it was just Richard Dunne's luck his blunder should come in Villa's biggest game of the year. The Irishman was robbed by Dimitar Berbatov close to his own penalty area and though he made up the ground, in making his despairing tackle, Dunne only succeeded in rolling the ball into Owen's path, offering the kind of instinctive first-time finish he has made a career out of.
That Owen's contribution - and Rooney's exile - came to an end three minutes before the break was cause for regret, although the watching Fabio Capello has long since deduced those dodgy hamstrings cannot be trusted through another World Cup campaign.

Capello was probably also reaching the conclusion Stephen Warnock should be handed his problematic left-back berth against Egypt on Wednesday. But when Warnock slipped just before half-time, man-of-the-match Valencia galloped past him down the by-line, his cross eventually arriving at the feet of Park Ji-sung, who slammed it onto the inside of a post, where it rocketed across goal for Carlos Cuellar to hack clear.

Friedel palmed away a magnificently constructed effort from Michael Carrick after half-time, although Villa were United's equals and could easily have levelled when Ashley Young sent a volley bouncing into the ground.

The problem for Villa was knowing Rooney lurked. After falling victim to him in midweek, Gianfranco Zola claimed England's superstar has the Midas touch. It is more a Boy's Own story he is writing at the moment and having looped home yet another header to put his side ahead, Rooney came agonisingly close to making it number six when he crashed another onto the woodwork.
Villa responded in kind, Vidic nudging Emile Heskey's header onto his own bar. But that would have spoiled the story.

A great comeback from Manchester United!
They fully deserve the trophy! :)

Inter Milan - Chelsea

What can only be described as a match of the ages, Inter started with a bang, it took them just 3 minutes to set up Diego Milito in the box, Milito turned Terry inside out, striking it past Cech and put Inter in front. Chelsea had an immediate reaction, they kept possession and stopped any of Inter's advances up the field quickly, many good shots on goal, and Drogba hit the crossbar with a rocket free kick, but the two teams went in 1-0 at halftime. Right after the half, Chelsea wanted a penalty after Samuel tripped up Kalou in the box, but the Ivorian made theatrics of it and that could be the reason that the referee saw it as a dive. As Chelsea pushed, the goal eventually came, a long range effort by Kalou snuck past a distracted Julio Cesar into the bottom corner. But Jose Mourinho's team reacted immediately, Inter pushed up the field and Cambiasso drilled a shot past Cech to make sure that Inter stayed ahead. Inter have the win, but Chelsea have a crucial away goal.
Final score: 2-1

Stuttgart - Barcelona

Barcelona were unable to put their stamp on this match, the European champions were slow to start and lucky to get the away goal, Cacau started the scoring in the 25th minute with a fantastic header over Valdes. Barcelona eventually woke up and started to create some scoring chances, eventually Ibrahimovic was 1 on 1 with Lehmann, the goalie made a fantastic save, but the Swede was able to get the rebound which he promptly tucked into the net. Barcelona will be rueing their injuries and will be trying to make a bigger bang at the Camp Nou.
Final score: 1-1

Olympiakos Piraeus - Bordeaux

A match where Bordeaux will be glad to have gotten the away goal, but unhappy to not have put the tie away with a couple more. Ciani's goal was at the end of the first half, after a controversial free kick awarded by referee Howard Webb, the Frenchman headed the ball into the net. At the final minutes, Olympiakos were disallowed a goal because Howard Webb claims to have seen the young Englishman Derbyshire impeding Carasso from challenging Lua Lua who's goal was disallowed.
Final score: 0-1

CSKA Moskva - Sevilla

This match was very similar to the Stuttgart vs Barcelona match and the Olympiakos vs Bordeaux match, Sevilla pushed, but wasted chances to take more than one crucial away goal against a strong CSKA Moskva side. It seemed like everything was perfect after Alvaro Negredo scored in the 25th minute, but Gonzalo scored a fantastic rocket goal to keep Moskva in the tie. A rocket shot that was unstoppable for the Sevilla goalkeeper Palop, and Sevilla will be disappointed with the wasted chances.
