Villarreal Players Celebrate Christmas: Video

I know that I already posted a "Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays" post to all you readers, but when I saw this video I knew that I had to post it. It's a video that some Villareal players: Giuseppe Rossi, Santi Cazorla, Gonzalo Rodriguez, Joan Capdevilla, and Diego Lopez made in their free time. I guess if I ever became a professional player I'd be making weird celebratory videos...

Here it is, enjoy.

Matches To Watch This Weekend: Barcelona - Villarreal

Not sure what matches to watch this weekend? Well, I've decided that before every weekend I'll be writing a little preview post entitled, "Matches To Watch This Weekend" where I try and find enticing fixtures for you to watch. I hope you enjoy it.

May 02, 2010 - Villarreal, Spain - VILLARREAL (SPAIN) 01/05/2010.- FC Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic (L) fights for the ball with defender Joan Capdevila (R) of Villarreal CF during their First Division soccer League match played at Madrigal stadium in Villarreal, Spain on 01 May 201.
Barcelona - Villarreal

With two weeks before Barcelona and Real Madrid clash in "El Clasico", Guardiola's team will have to face Villarreal. Villarreal, the team with the nickname "The Yellow Submarine", has done a fairly good job of keeping up with Barcelona and Real Madrid this season, and they surely intend on continuing their good form. Right now the top of the La Liga table looks something like this:

Real Madrid     26
Barcelona        25
Villarreal          23
Espanyol         18
Valencia          17

And while last season Barca and Real were in a league of their own, they're being followed by Juan Carlos Garrido's Villarreal side. So the question is, can Villarreal manage to slow down Barcelona this weekend? Probably not, although the newly-promoted side Hercules managed an epic 2-0 win against Barcelona at the Camp Nou, I don't think that the Catalans will let something like that happen again.

But, no matter how improbable it is that Villarreal manage to get a positive result from this match, it's still one you should watch. The main reason is that watching Barcelona weave their beautiful football, while Villarreal try to squeeze a result with their formidable attacking duo of Giuseppe Rossi and Nilmar, will be exciting without a doubt.

Jan. 24, 2010 - Milan, Italy - epa02004014 Inter Milan's Javier Zanetti (L) struggles for the ball with AC Milan's Ronaldinho (R) during their Italian Serie A soccer match at Giuseppe Meazza stadium in Milan, Italy, 24 January 2010.
Inter Milan - AC Milan

This match has to be included, it's my favorite derby of the world, mainly because it always has meaning, and there's always a fierce rivalry between the two sides. Right now AC Milan are top of the table in the Serie A, while Inter Milan is in fourth place, but if the nerazzurri manage to win this match, they'll draw level on points with their rossoneri cousins. That also means that this match is the perfect chance for AC Milan to increase their lead on last year's champions to six points, so it's without a doubt, an extremely important fixture for both sides.

If you're interested in a bigger and better preview, with info on which players will manage to play,  make sure to check out my preview here.

Juventus - Roma

Another big Serie A game, and this is probably the most unpredictable match which is taking place this weekend. Both sides have been doing very well recently, and this clash will probably determine who can go on to challenge for the Serie A title. This match features plenty of tension and rivalry with Ranieri coming back to his old club's stadium with his new and energetic Roma side.

I'll certainly be watching this match because I think that this match will have goals in it, but for which team the goals are, I don't really know. And if you're interested in a more in-depth preview of this match, you can click here.

Jan 09, 2010 - London, England, UK - Premier League: Arsenal 2 v 2 Everton.Arsenal's TOMAS ROSICKY and TIM HOWARD of Everton.
One of the most epic images I've seen in a long time...
Everton - Arsenal

Arsenal have a tough match to play at Goodison Park, and next week they'll be hosting their long-time rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium. If Arsene Wenger can manage to get his side to churn out a good result this weekend away from home, they'll be able to carry the good form into next week's crucial derby.

But this match is probably more important for Everton, mainly because they haven't been doing too well this season, and defeating the Gunners could be the perfect springboard to get back on track this season. I'll certainly be watching to see how Arsenal play, whether they go for defensive possession, or if they go out there to win the match. Meanwhile I think that Everton will have to play to win, because another loss could seriously impact the club's morale.

The Rebirth of Villareal, Newcastle, and Lazio

This week I'm writing about three clubs from three different leagues, but they're all overachieving this beginning of the season. Villareal, Newcastle, and Lazio are all getting fantastic results this season, but the question is, can they continue this good form?

A group hug after a fantastic goal by Andre Dias
Lazio

Lazio had a very disappointing 2009/10 season, they arrived 12th in the Serie A after a bad run in the Europa League as well. But this season the president Claudio Lotito reinforced, picking up important and talented players like the Brazilian central midfielder Hernanes, along with a fantastic coach, Eduardo Reja.

With only one loss so far this season, Lazio have picked up 22 points out of a possible 27, and this great record puts them top of the table. Lazio are first with a four point lead ahead of last year's Serie A champions Inter Milan, and it doesn't seem like the team will be stopping anytime soon.

Their latest result was a hard-fought 1-0 win over Palermo, and although they didn't play that well, they managed to find a goal with Andre Dias volleying a great ball into the top corner. But it's not like Lazio have been sneaking 1-0 wins to the top of the table, Edy Reja's side has been playing some fantastic football in order to arrive where they have.

So the question arises, can Lazio continue this run of good form, and win the scudetto? Well, I'm going to say no. Mainly because the squad is slightly lacking in depth, and an injury to Hernanes, Ledesma, or Zarate could cripple the side. But Lazio can certainly aim for fourth spot, and maybe even third. Sadly I think that as the season drags on, it'll become more and more difficult for the side to keep up with the "bigger sides", but maybe I'll be proved wrong.

The American/Italian Giuseppe Rossi
Villarreal

Villarreal is another side which didn't do very well in their domestic league last season. They arrived 7th, and while this might not seem that bad at first, the club was used to having the income of Champions League football, something that they'd have to do without this season. But they're looking better than ever now, and they find themselves 3rd in La Liga, behind the two giants of Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

And it's not like the "yellow submarine" is light-years behind Real and Barca, Villarreal is actually just two points away from second placed Barcelona, and three from first placed Real Madrid. While Villarreal are a pretty experienced side, with well-known players, they have some unique jewels in their forward line which have been scoring plenty of goals for the club this season.

Their main two talented forwards are the Brazilian Nilmar, and the American/Italian Giuseppe Rossi. And as backup to those two, there's the American international Jozy Altidore, who's just 20 years old. So far this season, Villarreal has scored 17 goals, of which five were scored by Giuseppe Rossi, and six by Nilmar, so it's evident that the strike partnership is one of the best in La Liga.

The yellow submarine's latest result was a tight 1-1 draw away against Sporting Gijon, first the away side scored with a penalty in the second half, but Villarreal pushed and got a penalty in the final minutes of the match. Giuseppe Rossi scored the penalty to make sure that his side which had been reduced to ten men because Gonzalo was sent off, got an important point.

So what can Villarreal achieve this season? Well, I think that third place for this side would be fantastic. They haven't got too much competition right now for the third place they're currently in, so it seems very possible that they'll be back in the Champions League next season. But can this side dream of splitting up Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of the table? Not this season, but maybe with years to come, when they're talented youngsters have developed into world class players, we might even see Villarreal become the champions of Spain.

Newcastle

Newcastle spent last season in the Championship, fighting to get back into the Premier League for this season. And now that they're back in England's top league, they're really making themselves known to be dangerous opponents. They're currently 7th in the league right now, and they'll need all their strength to remain there considering that there are some tough sides which will fight for their spot in the top half of the table.

Their latest result must be mentioned, they played at home against their rivals Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby. The final result was a resounding 5-1 win for Newcastle, thoroughly humiliating their rivals with a hat trick by Kevin Nolan. But the question must be asked, with a match away at Arsenal coming up next week, could the tables turn on Chris Hughton's side, and could they be on the end of a humiliating spanking?

While I will leave that question unanswered until next weekend, I will reveal how I think Newcastle will do this season in the Premier League. I expect the side to arrive at least to 10th place, if not further up the table. They have a squad full of quality players, and their big forward Andy Carroll has been banging in goals and creating chances for his teammates. The true question is, after this season, how will Newcastle manage to push up into England's best clubs?

I'll leave that for you to think about, so please, comment below regarding any of these three clubs, or the weekend's action from anywhere around the world.

Everton Overpower Manchester United and Real-Ronaldo Pummels Villareal

This weekend must be described as liberating for me, not only is an american finally proving his worth abroad, Landycakes at Everton, but we are finally seeing some fantastic football by Real Madrid, guided by its galacticos.

Real Madrid - Villareal

We start at the Santiago Bernabeu, Manuel Pellegrini was under a lot of pressure after the Lyon loss, and it seemed that Villareal was finally rising up the tables in La Liga, but a spectacular free kick by Ronaldo in the 18th minute seemed to put the game to bed, and only 2 minutes later Kaka' put a penalty away. Then Marcos Senna scored a fantastic free kick to keep Villareal in the match, but Higuain promptly puts away a goal after halftime. Nilmar scores for Villareal, but the game was definitely over after Higuain scored another in the 71st minute, and Kaka' and Xabi Alonso followed soon after making the final score, 6-2.

In Spain, Barcelona had no trouble facing Racing Santander who recently had their young starlet, Sergio Canales, bought by Real Madrid, Barca scored four to keep themselves five points ahead Real Madrid. Mallorca's fantastic run ends against Sevilla, a 3-1 victory, but the talking points were the two red cards to Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo and Zokora, and Mallorca's Ramis. David Villa scores two to make sure Valencia get past Getafe 2-1, and Almeria beat a disappointing Atletico Madrid.

In England, Everton beat Manchester United, 3-1, the red devils were overpowered by Everton and its teamwork, Rooney was disappointing and it seems that Chelsea could run away with the title after winning against Wolves 2-0. Arsenal rise up to beat Sunderland 2-0, and Aston Villa have a fantastic match against Burnley with the final score being 5-2 for Villa. Manchester City and Liverpool had a terrivle match between them, the final score 0-0, the two teams were scared of giving up anything, taking out any excitement from the match. Tottenham continue their romp to fourth place after beating Wigan 3-0 thanks to two goals by the controversial Pauvlychenko, who although is disliked by Redknapp, the Russian can only score goals.

In Italy, Genoa find their form against an ever-sinking Udinese who has re-signed Marino as it's coach, Genoa beat Udinese 3-0 thanks to two goals by Acquafresca and one by Palacio. Inter Milan lose more points against Sampdoria after Cordoba and Samuel were sent off, leaving the nerazzurri in nine men, the two teams drew 0-0. All the teams chasing Inter were able to nab wins, Roma beat Catania 1-0, Juventus beat Bologna 2-1, and AC Milan beat Bari 2-0 after a fantastic bicycle kick by Borriello.
